Stand in Support of the Victims of Devastating South-Central Storms and Tornado
April 29, 2014 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
As the south-central United States begins the daunting process of rebuilding its weather-torn communities, HRC’s thoughts and prayers remain with the families morning the loss of loved ones.
We stand in solidarity with the millions impacted by the devastating storms that ripped through their backyards as they now embark on the daunting journey of recovery.
In an emergency or disaster situation, vulnerable populations like LGBT people are at a heightened risk for trauma and may be less likely to have access to emergency services. HRC's A Cultural Competence Guide for Emergency Responders and Volunteers resource is a guide for local, state, federal and community organizations on how best work with LGBT people and families during disasters or forced evacuations.
The Red Cross is active with immediate relief at shelters and in the areas of devastation. To help, donate online directly to the Disaster Relief fund or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS(1-800-733-2767). You can also make a $10 donation by mobile phone when you text REDCROSS to 90999.
