Speaking Up for Marriage Equality in the Free State
February 2, 2011 by Anthony Moll
The following is from Jason Lott, HRC staff member and Maryland resident:
Last night, I had the opportunity to travel to Annapolis with Equality Maryland for Why Equality Matters Day where I spoke with my state Senator, Victor Ramirez about the importance of the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Act and the Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act.
I’m proud to say that my elected official, state Senator Ramirez, is a strong supporter of both pieces of legislation. As a member of the Judicial Proceedings Committee, Ramirez’s support for both of these bills is key to passage. During the lobby day, I was asked if I had married my partner since Maryland already recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. I stated that we decided to wait on getting married until the day when my partner and I could marry at home, rather than leaving the state to have our love and commitment honored by the law.
This Tuesday, February 8th, is the hearing on the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Act, and it’s so important that we demonstrate our support for marriage equality. It is essential that Marylanders who support ALL families, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have a strong presence at these hearings to show just how much equality means in the Free State. Will you become a part of history and attend the hearing with us? If you can join us, please contact Aimee@equalitymaryland.org for details and to RSVP or to inquire about testifying.
