South Carolina, Indiana Get LGBT License Plates
January 26, 2012 by HRC staff
The following post comes from HRC Communications Intern Matt Arnstine:
In South Carolina and Indiana, there’s a brand new way to show your support for equality: license plates. In addition to your HRC equality bumper stickers, South Carolina’s equality supporters will soon be able to purchase a specialty plate for $25, with half of the fee being donated to SC Equality. In the Midwest, Indiana residents now can choose to adorn their car with a rainbow-hued license plate that benefits LGBT youth via Indiana Youth Group. Having an LGBT license plate is just one more way to show your pride.
South Carolina and Indiana join Maryland as states that have LGBT license plates. While your car now can be easily recognizable due to the numerous equality logos and plates, if you’re a same-sex couple in either South Carolina or Indiana, you’re still legally strangers under state law. No marriage equality, no civil unions and no domestic partnerships exist for same-sex couples – despite the fact that a majority of Americans now support marriage equality.
