Singer-songwriter Frank Ocean came out via Tumblr over the Fourth of July holiday.
Responding to rumors that he would be coming out on his upcoming album, Channel Orange, the rising star of hip-hop and R&B published a post originally intended for the album’s liner notes.
Ocean describes falling in love for the first time with another man four years ago. “I don't know what happens now, and that's alrite. I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore,” he writes. “I feel like a free man.”
Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons praised Ocean for his game-changing courage in a letter to Global Grind. “Today is a big day for hip-hop. It is a day that will define who we really are. How compassionate will we be? How loving can we be? How inclusive are we?” Simmons previously recorded a video for HRC's New Yorkers for Marriage Equality series.
Ocean has written songs for John Legend, Beyonce and Justin Bieber. Channel Orange is due out July 17.
