HRC on Capitol Hill for Lobby Day

Equality supporters are taking action to show the broad and bipartisan support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) today – hundreds of Americans are having in-person meetings on Capitol Hill and placing calls to their lawmakers about the legislation. Call-in information for specific Senators is available at www.workplaceopportunity.org/LobbyDay.

ENDA supporters are in DC from 24 states, and are meeting with lawmakers including Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Dean Heller (R-Nev.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) The government shutdown isn’t dampening the enthusiasm of today’s participants – both straight allies and LGBT people – who are eager to be in DC educating and advocating for this important legislation.

Our efforts were temporarily halted after Capitol Hill went on lockdown following a shooting. All participants from today's lobby day are safe.

Americans connecting with their lawmakers have a lot of compelling information to share: ENDA enjoys bi-partisan support on the Hill and boasts a rare, diverse coalition of backers outside of the Beltway. Fortune 500s and other companies, big and small, support ENDA; as do religious leaders from varying faith traditions.  And brand new polling on the legislation released this week shows support for ENDA nationwide at nearly 70 percent – including 56 percent of Republicans.

Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he’d like to bring ENDA to the Senate floor sometime soon. Earlier this year, the bill passed out of a Senate committee with bipartisan support, including Republicans Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).

Learn more about ENDA at www.hrc.org/ENDA. And don’t miss this opportunity to speak out in support of ENDA: look up the contact information for your Senators now, and call them to ask them to get behind this legislation. A full list is available at www.workplaceopportunity.org/LobbyDay
