Settlement in NY School District LGBT Discrimination Case
April 2, 2010
As previously reported here on HRC Back Story, a fourteen year old gay male student filed suit in federal court last summer claiming he was relentlessly bullied by classmates because of his gender expression while school administrators stood by. The U.S. Department of Justice sought to intervene in the suit earlier this year, citing the ''important issues'' it raised in enforcing federal civil rights laws. This school district and plaintiff settled on Monday. Under the settlement, the district agreed to implement changes to protect students from harassment, including additional staff training. The district also agreed to pay $50,000 to Jacob's family and to reimburse them for counseling services. The district didn't admit to any wrongdoing under the settlement.
