Just hours from when the U.S. Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments in two historic marriage equality cases, Windsor and Perry, Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner announced their support for marriage equality.
Democratic Sen. McCaskill, who just one month ago signed an amicus brief in support of the repeal of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act, took to her Tumblr on Sunday to announce that her views on marriage equality have evolved.
In her post on Sunday, she wrote, “I have come to the conclusion that our government should not limit the right to marry based on who you love… Supporting marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples is simply the right thing to do for our country, a country founded on the principals of liberty and equality."
Democratic Senator Warner, who also signed the brief, took to Facebook today to announce that he too had evolved on marriage equality. He wrote, “I support marriage equality because it is the fair and right thing to do… This is the inevitable extension of my efforts to promote equality and opportunity for everyone.
McCaskill and Warner are in good company, joining not only Republican Sen. Robert Portman who announced a reversal in opinion last week, but also the majority of Americans who support marriage equality.
