Senator Tim Johnson Announces Support for Marriage Equality
April 8, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
Today senior U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) became the 54th Senator to publicly support marriage equality.
Just last week another three Senators joined the majority of the Senate in support of loving, committed same-sex couples.
Sen. Johnson stated,
"After lengthy consideration, my views have evolved sufficiently to support marriage equality legislation," Johnson said in a statement. "This position doesn't require any religious denomination to alter any of its tenets; it simply forbids government from discrimination regarding who can marry whom."
With announcements from Sens. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Tim Johnson (D-SD), the total number of U.S. Senators backing marriage equality has reached 54, including 50 Democrats, 2 Independents and 2 Republicans. Just three Democratic Senators have yet to publicly support marriage for gay and lesbian couples.
