Senator Portman’s Son Will Writes about Coming Out to his Family
March 25, 2013 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Coordinator
When Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) announced his support for same-sex marriage earlier this month, he said it was conversations with his openly gay son Will that influenced his shift in opinion.
Will, a junior at Yale, has now written an essay for the Yale Daily News, describing the fears that kept him from coming out and what it means now to stand proud with the support of his family.
Now, my friends at Yale and the folks in my dad’s political orbit in Ohio are all on the same page. They know two things about me that I’m very proud of, not just one or the other: that I’m gay, and that I’m Rob and Jane Portman’s son.
