Senator-Elect Tammy Baldwin Makes History as First Openly Gay U.S. Senator
November 6, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Senator-elect Tammy Baldwin is no stranger to shattering glass ceiling, and her win tonight again earns her a spot in the history books.
As the first openly gay person elected to U.S. Senate, Tammy Baldwin is a role model for LGBT youth and all young women across the country.
Baldwin is the strongest voice for equality on Capitol Hill, and has championed every piece of LGBT legislation during her tenure in office.
To help elect Tammy Baldwin, HRC:
- Promoted the Baldwin campaign regularly across HRC’s online properties, including the Election Center website and blog, as well as social media.
- Called out attempts by the Tommy Thompson campaign to attack Baldwin for her sexual orientation.
- Sent half a dozen HRC staffers to support the Baldwin campaign and other pro-LGBT equality candidates in Wisconsin.
- Conducted phone outreach throughout Wisconsin.
