Senate Confirms Senator John Kerry as Secretary of State
January 29, 2013 by Brian Moulton, Legal Director
This afternoon, the United States Senate voted 94-3 to confirm Massachusetts Senator John Kerry to be the next Secretary of State, replacing his former Senate colleague Hillary Clinton, who is stepping down at the end of this week.
Kerry has served in the Senate since 1985 and has been a stalwart champion of LGBT issues, both domestically and internationally. He has consistently scored 100 percent on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard and taken the lead on important issues like repealing the HIV travel ban and addressing the needs of LGBT runaway and homeless youth.
Under Senator Kerry’s leadership, we look forward to continued progress on LGBT issues at the State Department, where Secretary Clinton has made extraordinary strides for our community.
