Sen. Ben Nelson Reaffirms Support for DADT Repeal
August 2, 2010
The following post comes from HRC Field Organizer Rachel Gehringer-Wiar: The repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” made its way into U.S. Senator Ben Nelson’s speech at the Nebraska Democratic Party Convention last weekend:
Now, let’s get onto one issue that has divided people for too long—the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I don’t believe that most Nebraskans want to continue a policy that not only encourages, but requires people to be deceptive and to lie in the military that prides itself on honesty and integrity, and not always to have to look the other way to keep people in the military.
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Nelson voted to include repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act, which is still pending in the full Senate. You can read the senator’s full speech here. With a Senate vote on repeal expected this fall, we continue working to make sure Nebraska’s other U.S. senator -- Mike Johanns -- knows that Nebraskans support repeal. If you are in the Omaha/Lincoln area and looking for opportunities to get involved, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. And no matter where you live, you can take action to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” this year by visiting http://countdown2010.hrc.org. Every action makes a difference!
