Today Secretary John Kerry delivered his first speech on LGBT policy and issues as part of LGBT Pride Month celebrations at the State Department.
While Kerry highlighted the progress achieved in the recent years, as well as the growing support of LGBT equality nationwide, he also made clear the tremendous work that lies ahead as we continue to stand for LGBT rights domestically and globally.
“Today we come with Pride to celebrate that the winds of freedom are blowing in the right direction, and that intolerance fades with each passing generation,” he said.
With a belief in the worth of every human being, we must continue moving toward our shared goal of justice and equality worldwide, said Kerry.
According to Kerry, the State Department is laying the groundwork in hopeful anticipation that the Supreme Court will strike down Section 3 of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.
Congressman John Lewis and National Center for Transgender Equality Executive Director Mara Keisling also spoke at the event. Judy and Dennis Shepard of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Director General Linda Thomas-Greenfield and Acting Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Uzra Zeya were also in attendance.
