Scouts for Equality Leader Zach Wahls Visits HRC

Today Scouts for Equality's Executive Director and co-founder Zach Wahls stopped by HRC's office in Washington, D.C., to talk about the organization's work to create a more equal and inclusive Boy Scouts of America.

SfE is a Boy Scouts of America alumni association dedicated to ending the BSA's ban on gay members and leaders. HRC contributed $25,000 to the organization to help bring about the change in policy.

Since BSA reaffirmed their discriminatory policy, the organization has lost over 20 percent of its membership, said Wahls, who first joined BSA at the age of six.

HRC has contributed $25,000 to Scouts for Equality to support its mission to save BSA as a cultural icon and to end its anti-gay policy.

Many prominent individuals, celebrities, politicians and business leaders have come out in support of the campaign to end discrimination in BSA. Just last week, the Mormon Church, the largest sponsor of Scout troops in the nation, added its voice in support of a proposed resolution to lift the ban on gay scouts.

While it is a step forward, the resolution, which representatives will vote on later this month, would keep BSA's discriminatory policy against gay leaders and staff intact.

HRC is calling on Boy Scouts to open the proud tradition not only to gay scouts, but leaders and staff as well. There's still time to send a letter to your local council. Act now and join the 40,591 supporters who have sent letters thus far.
