Say Aloha to Marriage Equality
November 13, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Last night, the Hawaii State Senate approved a bill to allow all loving and committed couples to marry.
The House has already passed the legislation and Governor Neil Abercrombie is expected to sign the bill into law in the coming days, allowing weddings to begin in the state as early as December 2.
Hawaii was one of the first states to begin fighting for marriage equality, and helped raise this question of fundamental rights to a national consciousness. And though our progress has ebbed and flowed over the years, we can finally claim victory.
While this is another exciting chapter in an a string of victories this year, it’s is also proof that hard work, long-term dedication, and the support of HRC’s members can make the difference when it comes to securing basic rights for couples.
There are now 16 states with marriage equality, and they all deserve to be recognized for leading the way.
Let’s send the message that equality is not only the right thing to do, it’s also good for business.
