SAGE Releases New Guide on Older LGBT Adult Care
March 23, 2012 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Coordinator
As the American baby boomers reach retirement age, the number of LGBT Americans over the age of 65 also continues to expand. Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) estimates that there are 1.5 million adults aged 65 and older who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and that number is expected to double by 2030.
SAGE recently released a new guide for improving aging services for older LGBT adults.
The guide includes tips on how care providers can draft inclusive intake forms and marketing materials, create LGBT-specific programming, and handle complex issues of confidentiality and disclosure for members of a population that has faced long-term stigma and discrimination.
Ultimately, the guide aims to increase awareness to ensure that older LGBT Americans can “successfully age with dignity and respect.”
You can view the guide here. You can also find a wide array of healthcare-related resources at HRC’s Health page. HRC is a proud sponsor of National LGBT Health Awareness Week 2012, which starts on Monday. Keep an eye out for related blog updates next week.
