Romney’s Three-Tier Marriage System: Where Do You Fall?
December 15, 2011 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
Mitt Romney is suggesting a three-tiered federal marriage amendment to the Constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman, allow same-sex couples currently married to stay married, and ban future committed same-sex couples from marriage.
Romney told the Boston Herald:
“I think it would keep intact those marriages which had occurred under the law but maintain future plans based on marriage being between a man and a woman.”
Romney also has signed onto NOM’s radical Marriage Pledge, which demands candidates support a federal marriage amendment and pursue a defense of DOMA, sets up a McCarthy-like committee to investigate the alleged “harassment” of NOM’s supporters, and repeals marriage equality in the nation’s capital.
