Rick Perry Continues Fumbling on Marriage Equality
July 30, 2011
Texas Governor Rick Perry – who in recent weeks said marriage equality was a state’s rights issue – continued to blur where exactly he stands by today saying he supported a federal marriage amendment that would discriminate against LGBT Americans and take away the ability of states to decide the issue for themselves.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Perry said: "Yes, sir, I would. I am for the federal marriage amendment…And that's about as sharp a point as I could put on it."
HRC has a series of questions that we’re asking Gov. Perry each day in an attempt to reconcile his conflicting statements and determine what exactly his thoughts on marriage equality are. Today, tweet Gov. Perry and ask him: Governor Perry, do you support the rights of states to enact legal protections, responsibilities and benefits for gay and lesbian couples?
HRC’s Call it Out campaign is tracking Gov. Perry’s anti-gay rhetoric and activities. One week from today, he’ll be hosting “The Response” in Houston – an exclusive day of prayer sponsored by some of the most rapidly anti-gay groups and leaders in the nation, including the American Family Association and Lou Engle’s TheCall.
