Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee Hears Marriage Bill
March 22, 2013 by David Contreras Turley, Senior Regional Field Organizer
On Thursday, at 4pm, the Senate Judiciary committee began its hearing on the marriage bill as well as the discriminatory referendum bill. Twelve hours later, at 4am, the marathon panel ended.
HRC's State Legislative Director Sarah Warbelow, testified on behalf of HRC in support of the marriage bill.
We have been working very hard and we are very excited to hear all the powerful testimonies from our supporters. Couples, parents, families, faith leaders, business executives, elected officials, and other members of our diverse coalition testified about why marriage matters for all loving, committed couples in the state.
We’ve really come a long way since we launched our campaign in January. We are confident that today’s hearing will move us forward even further, taking this critical step in making our case to members of the Senate.
All our hard work is really paying off. Just this week, we’ve secured two new marriage equality supporters in the Senate and three Senators removed their name from the discriminatory referendum bill in front of the Senate.
