Reps. Hanna and Dent to Co-Sponsor UAFA
December 14, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, Online Content and Marketing Manager
Exciting news, yesterday Reps. Richard Hanna (R-NY) and Charles Dent (R-PA) joined as co-sponsors of the United American Families Act (UAFA). Having these two Republican members support UAFA at this critical time marks a significant step forward.
UAFA would allow lesbian and gay individuals the same opportunity as different sex, married couples to sponsor their spouses or partners for citizenship.
The Republican House members join a chorus of Americans that know keeping families together is worth fighting for.
Under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents may sponsor spouses for immigration purposes. However, same-sex partners are not considered spouses under the current law and therefore cannot sponsor them for family-based immigration, resulting in many same-sex, bi-national couples being kept or torn apart.
