Remembering the Lasting Impact of Ellen’s ‘Puppy Episode,’ 16 Years Later
May 1, 2013 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Coordinator
It’s been sixteen years since Ellen DeGeneres’ onscreen persona leaned across an airport PA system and announced to the world, “I’m gay.”
“The Puppy Episode” of Ellen aired April 30, 1997, and featured Oprah Winfrey as Ellen’s therapist, Laura Dern as Ellen’s crush Susan, and a brief cameo from Ellen’s real-life mom Betty.
Ellen’s courageous decision to live openly and honestly – both on- and off-screen – was truly historic, and through tough times and unparalleled success, she continues to inspire LGBT youth and so many others to proudly live their truth.
Check out the episode’s final scenes below. The big moment comes after the 3:30 mark.
You can also watch Laura Dern and Ellen discuss the episode’s lasting impact in this 2007 clip from The Ellen Show.
