Religious Leaders on Long Island for Marriage Equality
June 19, 2011 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
Today, I visited the UCC of Sayville to stand with other people of faith who support marriage equality in New York. One pastor expressed his support of marriage equality by explaining that it protects important religious freedoms. “Those of us who would like to marry same-sex couples in our church can, and those organizations who don’t wish to perform same-sex marriages don’t have to. It’s as simple as that.”
Also joining me, were Alex Martinez and George Geiger, from Long Island, who have been together for over 20 years and truly felt the need for marriage rights when George ended up in the hospital and Alex was unable to be with him or make any decisions regarding his health unless it was through their family. They expressed how lucky they were that their families are supportive of their relationship, otherwise Alex would have been kept from George in his biggest time of need. We then headed to the busy intersection and stood together, waving signs in support of marriage equality.
We’re on the verge of making history in New York by passing marriage equality for ALL New Yorkers. Make sure you make your voice heard. We’ve made it easy to call your state senator. Click here to make that call.
