Ready to Make History in the Land of Lincoln
May 30, 2013 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director

I’m back in Springfield to hopefully witness history today. I’m so proud to join my colleague Lynne Bowman and so many HRC volunteers, along with friends old and new from ACLU, Lambda Legal and Equality Illinois.
It’s an honor to be here; I am keenly aware of the years of work by Equality Illinois and others to first pass a nondiscrimination law in 2006, civil unions two years ago and now hopefully marriage equality today.
The march to equality is often a long one but the reward is oh, so sweet.
President Abraham Lincoln said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
I hope the Illinois House can bring the people of Illinois together in the name of equality.
Here’s to history.
