Reaching out to Utah’s Latino Community
July 13, 2010
The following post was submitted by John Bennett, who is HRC’s Political Co-Chair in Utah: On July 10th, the Utah Steering Committee of HRC participated in The Mestizo Westside Arts Festival in Salt Lake City. The Festival’s sponsor, The Mestizo Coffee Shop, was the recipient of the Inclusion Center for Community and Justice’s 2010 Humanitarian Award. Mestizo is a gathering place for artists, poets, and community activists, and HRC was honored to participate with dozens of other groups from the Latino community and beyond at this annual festival. We had the good fortune of being booth neighbors with Equality Utah, who graciously provided HRC with a canopy. The focus of our booth was to gather Spanish-language postcards to send to Utah’s Senators, urging immediate repeal of DADT. Eighty-nine postcards to Senator Hatch were collected, along with sixty-nine to Senator Bennett. These cards were mailed to Washington D.C. just as the full Senate is poised to debate DADT repeal as part of the Defense Authorization Act in the coming weeks.
