Putting the Pressure on Senator Bayh to Repeal DADT

The last couple of days in Indiana have been busy for the organizers, veterans and volunteers! We have filled up Senator Evan Bayh’s voicemail box in DC twice now and worked on his Indianapolis office with great efforts. Last week we had a letter writing party in Lafayette. An exciting group showed up, writing letters to Representative Buyer and Senator Bayh. While the letter writing party was in full swing, Scott Spychala, Indiana Veterans Outreach Coordinator and I headed out to the streets for a little stop & dial time. In two hours we got 66 phone calls to Sen. Bayh and filled up his DC voicemail box. That didn’t stop us though; we switched over to filling up his Indy office voicemail. Monday night Scott headed up to South Bend for some good old community outreach. After a letter writing party directed toward getting Representative Donnelly he headed out and collected still more phone calls. The next day, I met him up in South Bend for an in-district meeting with Rep. Donnelly’s office. We had a veteran with us telling his story and two more veterans call into the office because they couldn’t make it. The veteran who came to our meeting with us is risking everything to advocate for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” this year—he is still in the Navy. Scott also got to hand deliver the letter written the previous day. It was a very successful meeting for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Yesterday, I was at the Copper Cup in Bloomington. They offer the finest coffee in South Indiana. After my delicious cup of Joe, I headed to Congressman Hill’s office for a final in-district meeting before the vote while at the same time we had some volunteers in the field working on stop & dials. Later we set up on the campus of Indiana University (Hoosiers for Repeal!) for people to stop by and write letters to Senator Bayh and Representative Hill urging their support for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” this year. It was thrilling to see our work pay off last night!
