Prop 8 Trial – Day Seven

Tuesday saw supportive testimony for marriage equality, from both the personal and the professional perspectives.  San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders talked about his change of heart on marriage equality and his support for his own daughter’s ability to marry, stating that she “deserves to have the same right to have a wedding in front of family and friends as anyone else.”  Professor Lee Badgett expertly laid out the economic realities of marriage equality, both the harms that clearly result from denying marriage to same-sex couples and the lack of evidence that marriage equality has any negative effect on heterosexual marriages.  Check out Shannon Minter’s wrap-up at Pam’s House Blend for more details.            Today, we are slated to hear from Ryan Kendall, a gay man who underwent reparative therapy in his youth and will testify about the discrimination he has faced.  We are also likely to see video deposition testimony from pro-Prop 8 witnesses who have decided not to testify in the trial.  The plaintiffs’ lawyers are expected to wrap up their case either today or tomorrow, and then the defense will begin presenting its witnesses.  Remember the #prop 8 hashtag on Twitter and the Courage Campaign’s Prop 8 Trial Tracker site for frequent updates during today’s proceedings, and check back with us tomorrow morning for a wrap-up of today’s proceedings.
