March 6, 2012 by HRC staff
The following post comes from HRC Digital Media Team Member Eric Cameron:
Representative Donald Payne, New Jersey’s first and only African American congressman, has died of cancer at the age of 77.
Payne served as the ranking member of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights and as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Across his 23 years in House, he also championed equal rights for LGBT individuals, co-sponsoring the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and maintaining a near-perfect ranking on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard.
HRC will remember Rep. Payne for his steadfast support in the fight for equality. You can learn more about your own representatives’ voting records by viewing HRC’s Congressional Scorecard for the 111th Congress.
