Pride Returns to Butte, Montana

Montana state flagBig Sky Pride will return to Butte, Montana this weekend. Governor Steve Bullock will headline the rally and the four couples who are plaintiffs in the lawsuit challenging Montana’s discriminatory same-sex marriage law will serve as grand marshals.

“From the passage of local nondiscrimination ordinances and the repeal of language criminalizing LGBT Montanans, to the recent challenge to the state’s marriage ban, we’ve seen significant changes for our state,” Governor Bullock said in a statement. “While we celebrate these victories, Big Sky Pride will also serve as a reminder of the work left to be done to ensure that regardless of where they live, no Montanan is discriminated against because of who they are or who they love.”

HRC thanks Governor Bullock for his support of LGBT-inclusive laws at the local level. Several Montana cities have passed non-discrimination ordinances over the past four years, starting with Missoula in 2010, and most recently in Bozeman. HRC is now working with allies in Billings to advance LGBT protections. Learn more about HRC's local work in Montana and across the country here.
