Pride for our Green Mountain Heroes
June 30, 2010
One of the unsung heroes of the marriage equality movement in our country is Vermonter Steve Kimbell. For years he worked with lawyer Beth Robinson and her group Freedom to Marry to make Vermont the first state in the union to pass civil unions in 2000. Earlier this year, thanks to Steve and Beth, working closely with legislative leaders Peter Shumlin and Shap Smith, Vermont became the first state to enact marriage equality legislatively. Not insignificantly, the legislature, by one vote, overrode the Governor’s veto, the first time that had happened in over 16 years. Steve Kimbell is not just a savvy and respected lobbyist, he is sincere and dedicated to making life better for all. It was an honor for me to join Beth and many other longtime friends from across the Green Mountain State to congratulate Steve on his retirement. Vermont and our country are better off because of his labor of liberty.
