This evening, California's Porterville City Council is scheduled to consider whether to rescind a proclamation designating June as LGBT Pride Month and to change the process by which city proclamations are approved.

Mayor Virginia Gurrola issued the proclamation on June 4 at a contentious city council meeting. Issuing proclamations is solely the jurisdiction of the mayor, but the rest of the city council typically signs the document. However, none of the city councilors joined with the mayor in supporting the proclamation.

Tonight’s agenda includes both measures under the council’s scheduled matters.   

The Porterville City Council was the only city government in the state to support Proposition 8, the discriminatory ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage in California in 2008. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court returned marriage equality to California.
