P Square, an extremely popular African R&B duo who are currently signed by Akon’s Konvict Muzik label, took time out of their U.S. tour to post an anti-LGBT slur on Facebook last night.
The duo from Nigeria, comprising of identical twins Paul and Peter Okoye, wrote, "Living in a crazy world where some ladies turn their boyfriend into ATM machine (sic) and some guys turn their girlfriend into sex machine (sic). Crazy world where gay and lesbianism is officially permitted. I thought God create (sic) Adam & Eve and not Adam & Adamu."
In a record distribution deal with Universal Music South Africa and winners of multiple Headies (Hip Hop World Awards) and MTV Africa Music Awards, the very popular P Square spurred a furious debate on their Facebook page with over 250 comments and 800 likes in the past 20 hours, most of them supporting the duo’s stance and quoting passages from the Bible in support of the original post, spreading messages like “Lord have mercy on them” and “God will come and personally punish them.”
A few commenters, who criticized P Square’s post, were subjected to hate replies and comments like “shame on you” and asking them to “free from HOMOSEXUAL (sic), you are just a disgrace to our country.” In May, Nigeria passed a bill banning gay marriage and outlawing anyone from forming organizations supporting gay rights, setting prison terms of up to 14 years for offenders, but the bill is yet to be signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan. The bill also criminalizes public displays of affection between same-gender partners, operation of gay societies or organizations, and direct or indirect public show of a same-sex relationships.
The duo is currently on a tour of the United States and Canada and performs at Love Nightclub in NE Washington, D.C. late tonight at an after-hours event at 3 am. Nigerian activists and organizations are demanding to know why the anti-LGBT duo was given a visa for the United States and is asking for a stop to their tour.
