Poll: Record High Support for Same-Sex Couples
May 23, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Deputy Director of Marketing
Support for loving, committed same-sex couples is at a record high 59 percent – a 19 percentage point increase in the last 12 years, according to a Gallup poll released today.
The annual Values and Beliefs survey, which polls individuals’ opinions on the moral acceptability of 20 various issues, showed that Americans have in generally become more accepting since 2001.
Just a few weeks ago, a Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that 58 percent of Americans support marriage equality, up from the 37 percent in favor in 2003. Additionally, voters overwhelmingly said that the U.S. Constitution should be the basis for deciding if gay couples can marry rather than leaving the decision to the individual states.
Thus far 12 states, plus D.C., have marriage equality legislation on the books, and the country awaits the Supreme Court opinions regarding the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8.
