More than 30 protestors stood outside the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Washington D.C., this morning demanding that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni not sign the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law. Independent protestors and individuals representing over eight organizations today stood with banners and placards demanding the release of Ugandan citizens arrested for being LGBT along with attempting to submit petitions against the Anti-Homosexuality Bill to the embassy officials.
Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Center Global, St. Paul’s Foundation for International Reconciliation, Kuchu Diaspora Alliance, Standing on the Side of Love, Unitarian Universalist Association, Global Rights – Partners for Justice, and the American Jewish World Service were the organizations represented at the protest. AJWS today also submitted a petition signed by over 450 rabbis asking the Ugandan President to recognize the right of LGBT Ugandans and to do away with laws like these that violate human rights. Embassy officials refused to interact with the protestors and called the police to escort the protestors to outside the embassy premises.
