A new gallery from the Washington Post shares the stories of more than a dozen artists, athletes, musicians, veterans, activists and notable personalities who have come out as transgender in recent years.

From acclaimed Matrix director Lana Wachowski, who spoke publicly on her transition while receiving HRC’s Visibility Award in San Francisco last year, to punk rocker Laura Jane Grace, the gallery reflects just a small sample of the diverse experiences of transgender Americans across the country.
