Phoenix Celebrates the Municipal Equality Index
November 27, 2013 by Cathryn Oakley, Legislative Counsel, State & Municipal Advocacy
HRC’s Municipal Equality Index was released last week, and one of the cities with cause to celebrate was Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix was one of 25 cities to score a perfect 100 points, and one of eight cities to do so without the benefit of statewide non-discrimination or relationship recognition laws. The MEI calls these eight cities the MEI All-Stars because the entire 100 point lift was made by the cities and their citizens themselves.
Yesterday, I was honored to present Mayor Greg Stanton an award celebrating Phoenix’s perfect score at an event in Phoenix’s City Hall alongside business and community leaders. These leaders emphasized that municipal equality is about investing in the people of their city; attracting and retaining a diverse population translates to sustainable economic growth. It is also the right thing to do.
Phoenix has been working for decades to make the city a more inclusive place, and today’s event was a wonderful celebration of that work. Congratulations to the city, Mayor Stanton, the HRC Arizona Steering Committee, One Community, Equality Arizona, and all of the advocates who worked so hard to get Phoenix to a perfect 100-point score.
