Paul Ryan referred to traditional marriage as a “universal human value” on the campaign trail – representing an uptick in his tone on marriage equality following a relatively tame appearance at the Values Voter Summit earlier this month. BuzzFeed reported Ryan’s remarks.
At a campaign stop in Ohio yesterday, Ryan said:
Traditional marriage and family and entrepreneurship – these aren’t values that are indicative to any one person or race or creed or color. These are American values. These are universal human values. And so what Mitt and I are offering is an agenda of prosperity for everybody to have a chance....
Everyone, that is, except LGBT people. If you’re hoping the Romney-Ryan agenda of prosperity will bring you the chance to marry the person you love, think again. Not only do both men oppose marriage equality, but Romney has vowed to vigorously defend the Defense of Marriage Act and even pursue a federal marriage amendment. If you’re hoping the Romney-Ryan agenda of prosperity will bring you the chance to start a family and provide a loving home to children, think again. Mitt Romney – whose track record on LGBT families is blurry at best – has openly scorned families headed by same-sex couples, and has proven time and again that he is entirely unaware and unwilling to address the discrimination and obstacles those families face.
