Paul Ryan Speaks at Values Voter Summit
September 14, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
GOP Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan took the stage at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit earlier today. Ryan’s remarks mirrored a stump speech – he offered attacks on a number of President Obama’s policies – but he largely steered clear of speaking about LGBT equality.
Ryan said he brought greetings from his running mate, Mitt Romney. Romney addressed the Summit last year but is not attending this year. Ann Romney and Cardinal Timothy Dolan similarly declined invitations to participate.
It’s not surprising that even Ryan would want to steer clear of speaking about LGBT issues at an FRC event – their hateful and untrue rhetoric about LGBT Americans are so far out of the mainstream that it would be an affront for any elected official to take them seriously. FRC’s President, Tony Perkins, has called pedophilia a “homosexual problem.” An FRC fellow called for LGBT people to be exported, and even advocated for the criminalization of homosexuality.
Earlier this week, HRC joined the Southern Poverty Law Center and several other human rights organizations in asking speakers not to attend the conference. Check out the letter.
