Last Tuesday, HRC staff and volunteers met with Congressman Joe Heck’s District Staff to talk about the launch of the Americans for Workplace Opportunity campaign in support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). We were so excited to have the opportunity to make our voices heard.
Along with HRC staff, two local Las Vegas business owners, Latoya Holman, owner of Blowout Dollhouse, and Alex Marcy, president of Precise Integration, attended this kickoff constituent meeting. They were able to share their views on ENDA, and talk with the Congressman’s staff about how non-discrimination is simply good business! America’s employers agree – check out our Business Coalition of companies who support ENDA and have comprehensive anti-discrimination policies in their workplaces.
Every American deserves the chance to work and provide for their families . Employees should be judged on their merits, and not discriminated against based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Passing ENDA would ensure that ALL Americans have that right! Currently in 29 states, it is still legal to fire an employee simply for being gay or lesbian, and in 33 states you can be fired for being transgendered.
All LGBT Americans deserve basic workplace protections – civil rights should not depend on your zip code!
If you’re in the Vegas area and would like to get involved, join us on Thursday, March 27th at 7pm for a Progressive Letter Writing Party at the offices of PLAN! You can talk with representatives from HRC, Americans for Workplace Opportunity, PLAN, Sierra Club, and other great progressive organizations to learn and take action about causes that matter to you! It’s a one-stop shop of progressive activism!
And as always, you can visit www.workplaceopportunity.org for more information about ENDA, and to sign up to volunteer with us!
