HRC Joins Rally Outside of The Beverly Hill Hotel

Following the Human Rights Campaign's announcement last week that it was urging organizations to avoid hosting events at the anti-LGBT Sultan of Brunei's hotel chain, yesterday came news that leaders of those groups are abandoning the Sultan's Los Angeles properties rapidly.
Since Friday, most of the organizations receiving letters from HRC President Chad Griffin officially moved their events out of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah—the supreme ruler of Brunei and one of the wealthiest people in the world—owns the Beverly Hills Hotel, as well as the larger Dorchester Collection of hotels. Last week, he announced that he's moving ahead with plans to allow flogging, amputation and stoning as punishments for certain “offenses.” These “offenses” include, among others, adultery, out-of-wedlock pregnancy and same-sex relations.
HRC was proud to join our partners today in Los Angeles at a rally outside of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Alan Uphold, who is a former member of HRC's Board of Directors, addressed the gathering on behalf of the organization.
Attendees included Jay and Mavis Leno, Ellie Smeal of the Feminist Majority Foundation, and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, among many others.
