Oregon Transgender Student Denied On-Campus Housing with Male Friends

Near Portland, Oregon, Jayce, a transgender student at George Fox University, was denied on-campus housing with his male friends. According to PQ Monthly, Jayce "has medically and socially transitioned and has started his legal transition." In response to the denial, a lawyer for Jayce, Paul Southwick, filed a Title IX discrimination complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, reported PQ Monthly.
"The university violated Jayce's rights under Title IX because they denied him on-campus housing on the basis of his sex, gender identity and transgender status," Southwick told PQ Monthly. "The U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, and the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division recently determined that 'all students, including transgender students and students who do not conform to sex stereotypes, are protected from sex-based discrimination under Title IX and Title IV."
After meeting with the administration, Jayce told PQ Monthly, "... their ultimate decision makes me feel rejected, misunderstood and punished for something I cannot change. It also makes me anxious and nervous about where I'll be able to live next year -- and the year after that -- especially if their housing policy based on 'biological birth sex' goes into effect."
Jayce's mother has started a petition to help demonstrate support for Jayce to be treated the way all students should be treated.
She writes, "George Fox University's recent decision to deny Jayce on-campus housing with other male students has put his housing, and his education, in jeopardy, and caused him to feel rejection, rather than the love of Christ."
"There is nothing incompatible with being a Christian and being transgender and Jayce should be treated just like any student," Southwick said to Sultan Shakir, HRC's Program Director of Youth & Campus Engagement.
On Sunday, supporters of Jayce will hold a rally at 11:30 am on the sidewalk outside of the main entrance of the University. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/onegeorgefox
