Oregon Campaign Collects Signatures at fun. and Tegan and Sara Concert
August 31, 2013 by Trevor Chandler, Associate Regional Field Director
It was more than a fun time last night when a volunteer and I were able to collect hundreds of signatures at the fun. and Tegan and Sara concert here in Oregon. We were invited by The Ally Coalition, a group created by fun. and Rachel Antonoff to inspire people to fight discrimination, homophobia and transphobia.
At each stop of their "Some Nights" tour the band has included an “Equality Village” highlighting groups who are also working against discrimination and they were kind enough to give HRC and Oregon United for Marriage a spot.
Canvassing the incredibly long line for the concert a full three hours before it started we heard incredible stories from people who wanted to sign the petition. One woman stated that she was eager to sign because she had voted against LGBT rights when they last came to the ballot in Oregon and she wanted to make it right.
With these additional signatures we now have over 72,000 signatures as we work to put a consitutional amendment on the ballot that would make marriage equality a reality here in 2014. Many thanks to fun. for letting us be a part of their concert!
Trevor Chandler is a Senior Regional Field Organizer with HRC, he is on the ground for the duration of the campaign working with the team at OUM to secure marriage equality for all Oregonians.
