Open Lesbian Elected Leader of California Assembly
January 22, 2014 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Today, Toni Atkins was elected the Speaker of the California Assembly – the first open lesbian and only the third woman to hold the position.
Atkins, who previously served as Assembly Majority Floor Leader, will soon assume the seat currently occupied by John Perez, who also made history as the first openly gay California Assembly Speaker.
Assembly Speaker is considered the second most powerful office in California politics, after the Governor.
HRC congratulates Speaker-Elect Atkins on her victory and looks forward to the bright future for LGBT Californians under her leadership.
Speaker-Elect is no stranger to HRC. This past weekend, she volunteered with members of the HRC San Diego steering committee as part of the MLK Day of Service to support LGBT homeless youth.
