One Week Before Tenth Anniversary of Winter of Love

Ten years have gone by so fast.
In the winter of 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom married over 4,000 gay and lesbian couples in violation of state law, which came to be known as the Winter of Love. February 12 marks exactly ten years since this momentous event took place.
To celebrate the love and commitment that has been shared since those first couples were able to wed a decade ago, a Pinterest board has been designed as a community space for all the happy couples to share pictures from their weddings and other snapshots of love.
When marriages first began there were no cellphones that made it easy to share these memories. Facebook wasn’t a widespread platform and cloud storage didn’t exist. With these technologies available to us now, we ask that you share your memories for all to see. Everyone is welcome to share their own messages of equality as we celebrate the progress of the last decade.
“We are excited to have a platform to celebrate these moments of love that have come from the marriage equality movement over the past 10 years,” Human Rights Campaign Communications Director Michael Cole-Schwartz said. “We’ve come so far since those first vows were taken and it’s time we see and celebrate all of the wonderful wedding photos from thousands of couples who are now married as a reminder of the work still left before us.”
Eighteen states and the District of Columbia now allow same-sex marriage. Help us celebrate all of the major accomplishments that have happened in the LGBT movement since those first vows were said 2004 in San Francisco.
California’s Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom as well as the Human Rights Campaign, Marriage Equality USA, Equality California, the Courage Campaign, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, collaborated in building the Pinterest board, in an effort to gather as many pictures as possible.
We know that these photographs capture some of the most important moments of your lives and we’d like to see them. Share them on Twitter or Pinterest using the #WinterOfLove hashtag and they will be reposted on the “Winter of Love” board.
Share your memories with HRC on Pinterest.
