On the Ground with HRC and Washington United for Marriage
May 18, 2012 by Adrian Matanza, Senior Regional Field Organizer
The last couple of weeks have been pretty incredible. President Obama’s announcement of supporting marriage equality was followed immediately by a visit to Seattle. The crowds were large and our volunteers were fired up and ready to go. Canvassing the crowds coming to see the President was provided a fun and exciting day for volunteers and staff alike. Over 20 volunteers collected hundreds of pledges from Washington voters to Approve Referendum 74. One supporter was so glad to see us out working hard for marriage equality that she gave two tickets to see President Obama to one of our volunteers. Steve was thrilled to witness history and see President Obama the day after he came out in support for marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.
Talking to voters face to face is what will get us to victory in November and we’ve been out at festivals, farmer’s markets, and community events across the state, having one-on-one conversations with Washingtonians about the importance of marriage for loving, committed gay and lesbian couples. The reception at all events has been overwhelmingly positive and our volunteer army is growing as temperatures rise and we get closer to the June 6 deadline for our opponents to qualify for the ballot.
Join me and volunteers across the state in defending marriage equality and approving Referendum 74 at the ballot in November. Email me at [email protected] to get involved.
