On the Cusp of Equality in Arkansas
September 17, 2011
This post is from Zack Hasychak, Community Events Manager at HRC.
It’s been another great night for equality here in Little Rock. With HRC’s Equality Bus parked outside, we hosted over 200 LGBT and allied members of the Little Rock community to the beautiful Arkansas Art Center. The highlight of the evening was an in-depth presentation by HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse, examining the “Tipping Point” where the fight for LGBT Equality is currently positioned. Recent victories such as the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and marriage equality in New York are creating a “see-saw effect” with issues still faced by LGBT Americans, such as medical inequities and DOMA.
Arkansas still has a long fight for full LGBT equality, but because of the engagement of tonight’s audience, the LGBT leadership within Arkansas, and the conversations that are being amplified by HRC’s time in the state this week – we know this is a winnable battle.
Stay tuned for updates from our next stop in Eureka Springs tomorrow!
