Obama and Romney Agree: BSA Ban on Gays is Unacceptable

Post submitted by Dan Rafter, Former HRC Associate Director of Communications

President Obama said today that he opposes the Boy Scouts’ ban on openly gay people. In a statement, the White House said: “The President believes the Boy Scouts is a valuable organization that has helped educate and build character in American boys for more than a century. He also opposes discrimination in all forms, and as such opposes this policy that discriminates on basis of sexual orientation.”

Earlier this week, the Romney campaign expressed a similar sentiment, saying that Governor Romney holds the same position he held on the Boy Scouts as he did in 1994, when he said that “all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation.” Check out the video:

This is one of the few areas where Romney is actually consistent with a view he held in 1994 – and another example of how Romney wants to have his cake and eat it too. His 1994 statement also includes the caveat that he supports “the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue.”
