NY Organizing Update

ny-phonebank1From HRC organizer Rory: This week, HRC launched nightly phonebanks in New York City to call HRC members and supports to ask them to contact their state senator in support of marriage equality.  Everyone we have been calling at the HRC phone bank is so excited to contact his/her senator. You can feel that everyone is determined to do everything they can to bring equality to the empire state.  At the phonebank this past Sunday, I called an HRC member who has already written, called, and emailed her state senator, but when I called she was excited and said "Thanks for calling!  I'm going to do it all over again tomorrow!"  We should all take her lead and contact our state senators in any way possible this week, even if we already have.  Use smoke signals if you have to!!  Stay tuned for more updates about our nightly From HRC organizer Shanda: ny-phonebank2Today I attended The Unitarian Fellowship of Staten Island and it was awesome!  I got such a great response from the parishioners there and it was great to see people lined up and ready to write a letter to their state senator.  I listened to many stories of what it would mean if marriage equality passes.  One person I spoke to was a senior citizen.  She was short and spunky and was proud to say she was 80 years old.  She said she had been with her partner for over 35 years and although her partner had passed on now, she said this bill is for her too.  She told me it would mean the world to her if in her lifetime she could see this become reality.  As I looked around the room and heard more stories that touched my heart, I thought to myself how lucky I was to be part of this effort that will literally change so many lives including mine.
