NY Attorney Gen. Eric Schneiderman Leads Coalition Calling for ENDA House Vote

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is leading a coalition of 14 states urging Speaker John Boehner to allow the House to vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
In the letter, co-signed by California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington, Attorney General Schneiderman outlines the overwhelming public support for ENDA.
In fact, three out of four Americans support the passage of the bill, as do more than 100 of America’s biggest companies and respected brands.
ENDA, which passed the Senate earlier this month with bipartisan support from ten Republicans, would ensure basic workplace protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
“Allowing for a vote on a bill that would make it illegal to fire someone from their job simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity should be an easy decision for Speaker Boehner,” said A.G. Schneiderman. “Equal opportunity for all should be a top priority for Congress and ENDA provides an historic opportunity to take one step closer to that goal.”
Despite the widespread support for workplace protections, House Republican leadership is refusing to allow an up-or-down vote on the legislation. Instead, Boehner continues to use his bully pulpit to propagate false and factually inaccurate explanations about the bill and its impact.
Attorney General Schneiderman's notes that ENDA would provide an essential tool to all attorneys general to defend the rights of constituents, and in effect ending uneven protections of LGBT Americans, which currently depend upon the states or localities in which they live.
Today is just the most recent example of Attorney General Schneiderman’s commitment to LGBT equality and justice. Just a few weeks ago, Schneiderman joined a coalition of states calling for a federal end to same-sex marriage bans in Hawaii and Nevada.
