Just moments ago, the Nevada State Assembly approved SJR13, by a vote of 27 to 14 with Republican Assemblymember Michele Fiore joining the Democratic majority. SJR13 would begin the multi-year process of placing on the 2016 ballot a question to repeal Nevada's current ban on same-sex marriage and replace it with a law granting marriage equality to all Nevadans. You may recall, the state Senate approved this bill last month, by a vote of 12 to 9. In order to qualify for the 2016 ballot, this bill would need legislative approval again in 2015. Then, Nevada voters will have the opportunity to honor the thousands of loving, committed same-sex couples in the state by voting on full marriage equality.
I am more than honored to be here on the floor of the Assembly with my friend, James Healey. James was a former Board of Governor for HRC and a founding member of the HRC Las Vegas steering committee, working tirelessly to advance LGBT equality in the Las Vegas community. Now, as Assemblyman, James worked tirelessly to pass SB139, legislation adding gender identity and expression to the state's hate crimes law and SJR13, lobbying his colleagues to make sure marriage equality comes to the Silver State.
We'll need all the help in the coming months and years to pass SJR13 again in 2015 and keep pro-equality legislators in office next year. Stay tuned to how you can get involved in the efforts.
