North Dakota Newspaper Updates Wedding Section Policy
July 30, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
The Forum announced yesterday it will update its policy to allow same-sex wedding announcements in its newspaper, following public outcry on social media.
The North Dakota newspaper made news last week after it refused a lesbian couple a spot in print.
An editor from the paper e-mailed the couple, explaining, “The Forum does not print engagement/ wedding announcements for same-sex couples.”
HRC launched a petition and a Twitter action calling on the newspaper to update its discriminatory policy.
The Forum responded with a statement on Facebook stating it would review its policy.
Thanks to equality supporters, as of Sunday The Forum no longer discriminates against loving couples who wish to share their happiness with the town in which they live.
